It's a pretty common complaint across the population that gentlemen have a wonderful trip to the barbers, leave feeling fresh and sharp but then cant seem to redo their hair the same the next day.
Why? I hear you ask...
Well, i'm sure there are a number of reasons, and here are my top tips for recreating your perfect barnet!
1. Preparation.
If, like me you have thick unruly hair, no amount of product alone will tame it. Preparation is key. You should generally try to style your hair after it has been washed.
Blow drying, is no longer a thing just for ladies! It's 2019 chaps, get with the times. When you've washed your hair, a good blow dry and brush will go a long way.
Many methods are available, and for those of you that want to learn the most effective way to do it, come and ask me, Ill happily show you.
Most styles that your barber produces will be blow dried to finish. even the "rough messy looks". Drying helps maintain the volume and general structure of your hair style. stick your head out of the car window, (no don't actually) and you'll see what i mean.
If you have wavy or curly hair, if you want to make it less so, this step will also help you.
2. Products.
Right! Lets have a brief educational interlude about products. Firstly, please folks, stop using "hair gel". It's sticky, horrible stuff that clogs combs and feels horrible in the hands. especially when re-wet. Yuck!
In our modern era of modern men, there are a plethora of products to choose from. You don't have to go to Saver's and buy second rate mass produced gunk off the shelf, either.
Most barbers will have a brand that they like and recommend. For me, It's Squire. If you want more info on it, you can check out our products page - https://www.hedinghamcuts.com/products. We also have it in stock.
What i'm getting at really though, is that for your particular hair in a particular style, there is a particular product to do the job particularly well.
Squire's range of four different hair products, at least in my opinion, covers the spectrum of styles.
As a side note at least, for many, cost can be an issue. the question in many men's heads is probably,
"why spend nearly as much on a product as I have my haircut?"
Well gents, because you get what you pay for! That, and actually for the amount you'll need of a decent product in well prepared hair, one tin will last you long enough to "get your money's worth".
Bear in mind that I put product in gents hair, day in, day out, one tin will probably last me a month. If that's just you at home once or maybe twice a day, to me at least, its a no brainer.
Ask your barber for hair product advice.
3. Styling.
How you style your hair and the equipment you use will go a long way to maintaining your look.
Firstly, you have to take your time. If you want precision, it takes time, patience and practice.
Ask your barber to give you some tips pertinent to you style, it won't take much but it will certainly pay off.
Investing in some of the tools will help. I love the affect that a wide-toothed comb gives, and you can pick them up for under a quid!
Ultimately, its all about choice. stick with what you know and continue to get half a result, or take the time in having that conversation with your barber and investing a little time and lets be honest minimal expense to get exactly what you want!.
