Is good enough Good Enough?

It’s a funny thing, working as a barber. In this job, I seem to wear many hats. Barber (obviously), children’s entertainer and counsellor/therapist are but a few.
I must admit that I am awful at remembering names, but I do recall faces and conversations very easily.
Over the last few years, I have found myself becoming invested in people’s stories and their lives. I genuinely care.
When i found out that an elderly client of mine has passed away, I was genuinely upset by it. Some people share their most intimate problems, and I’m genuinely over the moon when I hear that they’ve been resolved.
So the cold hard business side of things says that I should get people in and out as quickly as possible to maximise profit but somehow, that doesn’t sit right with me.
While it’s true that we all go into business or go to work to make money, that just isn’t enough for me.
Unfortunately for some, I was born with the gift of intelligence. For me, going to work and “just doing my job” isn’t enough. I need mental stimulation.

Having a degree of life experience and empathy helps me along in my day to day life.
I love to listen, I love to debate with my clients and have meaningful conversations.
Of course, not all clients like that. Some people find it awkward to converse with a stranger, and that’s fine too. If I feel that’s the case, I can cut hair without talking. It’s all good.
So why am i going on about it? Well, firstly I need something to write about. But aside from that, I think it’s important to acknowledge that everyone is different and that’s ok.
Someone told me the other day that some people they know just won’t change barbers out of blind loyalty. Thats pretty incredible when you think about it.
I must admit that I’m very proud to have clients like this myself And I will use this opportunity to say Thankyou to all of you. Without your continued support, I could not have taken the step to starting out on my own!
But my big question is why? I’m ever grateful to my clients, like I said, but here’s where you can all help me once again, if you will.
I’d like to know what it is that we get right. What keeps you returning?
Some of you travel miles to get here, and I’m looking for good honest feedback.
